How Gummi Vitamins are Changing the Dietary Supplement Marketplace

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

The human body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals in order to develop and function normally—yet getting all them through food alone is nearly impossible.

This is why a majority of American adults take vitamins and supplements to maintain or even improve their overall health and well-being.

History of Vitamins:

The discovery of vitamins was a major scientific achievement in our understanding of health and disease. In 1912, Casimir Funk originally coined the term "vitamine." The major period of discovery began in the early 19th Century and ended at the mid-20th Century. Experiments conducted on animal models played a crucial role in nutrition research and greatly shortened the period of human suffering from vitamin deficiencies. Ultimately, it was chemists who isolated the various vitamins, deduced their chemical structure, and developed methods for synthesis of vitamins.

What Vitamins Are Essential:

The vitamins considered to be essential are Vitamins A, C, D, E, and K; as well as many of the B Vitamins, which are made up of thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxal (B6), biotin (B8), folate/folic acid (B9) and cobalamin (B12).

The minerals considered to be essential for optimizing health and well-being are calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, sulfur, cobalt, copper, fluoride, manganese, and selenium.

Evolution of Dietary Supplements:

As we continue to gain a better understanding of vitamins, minerals and the role that they play in a person’s health, well-being, and functioning of organs the importance of dietary supplements is becoming increasingly prevalent.

It was in the early 1800’s when Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, author of “Physiologie du Gout, ou Medetations de Gastronomie Transcendante” famously wrote: “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” From this came the common phrase “You are what you eat,” which is now truer than ever thanks to our understanding of food, nutrients, and vitamins.

Our understanding of how food can impact a person on an individual basis allows for personalized diets and helps consumers make informed decisions about purchases of dietary supplements—which are made from food, isolated nutrients or food-like substances to boost a person’s health.

Important factors to take into account when purchasing supplements include:

· Age

· Body composition

· Physical activity

· Overall nutritional status

In recent times, vitamin supplements are commonly found as a confectionery or “gummi” format. The era of swallowing large, chalky, hard-to-ingest, and bad-tasting supplements is quickly becoming a part of the past. People of all ages are realizing the benefits of vitamin supplements in the format of a gummy—for the benefits of taste, convenience, ease of ingestion, and customizability.

More importantly, the gummi vitamins have a greater nutritional benefit than traditional vitamins in pill format as they are more easily absorbed by the body—a concept known as bioavailability. A recent study conducted in 2019 published in the journal Nutrients focused on whether or not Vitamin D supplements in pill form and gummy form have bioequivalence—meaning two different dosage forms of a supplement with identical active ingredients possess similar bioavailability and produce the same effect at the site of physiological activity. The results of the study found that there was not a bioequivalence between pills and gummy vitamins and that the gummy had a greater bioavailability allowing the body to absorb more of the nutrients.

The Gummi World Diamond Team recognizes that these gummies are not only meant to be flavorful but that consumers depend on these products as a reliable source of vitamins to supplement their diets. Our nutritionist has the education, knowledge, and expertise to establish guidelines that will result in your gummy having the greatest bioavailability possible. We take pride in delivering a product of the highest value so that your business has a unique selling proposition that stands out among the rest of the competition.

While the rest of the industry is adding vitamins to their candy, you get to brand a flavorful vitamin with nutritional value.

Unlike traditional pills, gummi vitamin supplements also offer a unique ability to deliver purifying antioxidants and minerals to support hormone health and proper metabolism. Customized gummy vitamin supplements can also deliver newly discovered compounds, such as cannabidiol (CBD), which studies show offers cardiovascular benefits, relief from insomnia, and can potentially reduce the symptoms of neuropathic pain, anxiety, depression, and several other conditions.

The benefits of certain foods or dietary additives are indisputable—yet taste is often a determining factor in what people choose to eat—a factor easily fixed by a gummy vitamin supplement. Numerous studies focused on apple cider vinegar, for instance, show that it contains a variety of health benefits--including antioxidant effects. Evidence suggests that apple cider vinegar can aid in weight loss, reduce cholesterol, and lower blood sugar levels. However, few people are going to simply sip on pure apple cider vinegar.

Since they are produced in-house at Gummi World by our executive chef, gummy vitamins can deliver all of the benefits of apple cider vinegar without any of the poor taste. In fact, the taste can be customized to the customer’s choosing—the same with any of our supplement offerings.
